Notes - Served in the US army in World War II
- Gustave "Gus" Guenther, Davenport, passed away at his home Sunday, July 14, 2002, after a brief illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at The Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal.
Mr. Guenther retired in 1982 from McLaughlin Body Co., Moline.
He was born March 23, 1916, in Davenport, the son of Gustav and Laura (Schroeder) Guenther. On August 23, 1947, he married Mary Beert in Long Grove, Iowa.
Mr. Guenther served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was awarded the Order of the Purple Heart for wounds received in action July 5, 1944, following the Normandy invasion. He was inducted into the Army on March 30, 1941, and had two and a half years of training at Fort Meade, S.D. In addition to the Purple Heart, he wore the European- African-Middle Eastern Theater ribbon with four bronze battle stars for the Normandy Northern France, Ardennes and Central Europe campaignss. He also received American Defense and Good Conduct ribbons, the Bronze Star medal, three overseas service bars and one service stripe. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Davenport American Legion Post 26 and the 4th Cavalry of Fort Meade, S.D.
He enjoyed playing cards, the riverboats and traveling. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice, Handicapped Development Center Endowment Fund or Camp Courageous of Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; children, Patricia and Ken Ceurvorst, LeClaire, IA, Cynthia and Thomas Byrne, North Potomac, MD, Kevin and Linda Guenther, Bettendorf, and Sgt. John and Marie Guenther, Edgar Springs, MO; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Ella (Dean) Adolphi, Dobbins, CA; and brothers, Henry Guenther, Pittman, NJ, and Reo Guenther, Denver, CO.
